Our service and advice is completely independent of the government, international ship owners and Port operators. This enables us to make balanced
risk management decisions and facilitate equitable access to the Port for all users.
To manage risk in a highly dynamic environment, our pilots must make time-critical decisions utilising all available resources and technology. Each
pilot is responsible for managing hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of ship and cargo during transits into the sensitive Bay area. They are
the frontline of safety, ensuring that risk of a maritime, critical infrastructure or environmental disaster is kept to a minimum.

Moreton Bay is a special and very beautiful part of the world. It’s our job to minimise the impact of shipping on the area and it’s wildlife.
Moreton Bay Marine Park is formed by three large islands – Stradbroke, Moreton and Bribie. These islands protect a shallow and navigationally treacherous expanse of water from the Pacific Ocean storms and swell. Hundreds of smaller islands lie within the Bay, which is home to an extraordinarily diverse range of habitats such as reefs, rocky shores, mangroves, intertidal flats and ocean beaches.
Moreton Bay’s diversity makes it a truly fascinating natural wonder. One of the true privileges of being a marine pilot in Brisbane is being able to observe the Bay through all of its cycles.
Why Moreton Bay deserves our protection
Within the Bay the estuarine environment of the rivers and creeks which feed into the Bay meet with the marine environment. This results in the western shore being a predominantly estuarine habitat and the eastern shores very much marine. This collision of habitats occurs in the protected waters of the Bay negating the oceans usual ability to dominate the coastline through the action of the ocean swells and currents.
Moreton Bay’s diversity makes it absolutely fascinating and one of the true privileges of being a Marine Pilot in Brisbane is being able to observe this natural wonder through all of its cycles. The unique diversity of the Bay is driven by a combination of factors that result in the area being a collage of habitats and a quite unique ecology.
The diversity and ecological interest of the Bay is further enhanced by the sub-tropical location and its warm shallow waters. This creates an environment supporting a mix of estuarine and marine flora and fauna from both tropical and more temperate climates. The region is also prone to extended periods of drought interspersed with extensive flooding and monsoonal type conditions. As the climate cycles through its moods so to the ecology of the Bay must adapt more frequently and more routinely than might typically be expected.
The differing environments can at times be seen to compete, for example in periods of drought the Bay becomes more marine with the reduced fresh water entering the Bay. Similarly, the Bay’s location between tropical and more temperate waters means the area provides an important and sensitive indicator with respect to climate change. As water temperature increases tropical species increase in their distribution within the Bay and more temperate species decline.
