This is our story.
Brisbane Marine Pilots is a leading port pilotage service provider committed to Brisbane and supporting ports throughout Queensland.
We train and supply marine pilots to assist ships visiting the Port of Brisbane. We also provide a common safety system that all pilots working within the Port must adhere to. This training and safety system enables us to navigate large ships in the restricted waters of the Moreton Bay Marine Park with faultless performance.
Our pilots board arriving vessels off Mooloolaba and partner with the ships crews to manage the risks associated with manoeuvring these large vessels in the Port area.
Built on a heritage that dates back to 1825
John Gray, a pilot from Port Jackson, surveyed and buoyed the outer bar of the Brisbane River and Inner Channel with a view to establishing a settlement where Brisbane’s CBD is today. Gray was assisted by John Tosh, who became the first official marine pilot and Superintendent of Buoys.
In 1976, a purpose-built port was established on Fisherman Island at the mouth of the Brisbane River. This is now the hub of sea-borne trade in Queensland and is operated by the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL).
We continue the work of Gray and Tosh to this day
Brisbane Marine Pilots was officially established as an independent organisation in 1989. Since then, we have systematically been capturing the local knowledge, skills and methodologies that were historically passed between pilots.
The unique systems and technologies we have developed continue to set the benchmark for the piloting profession – now and into the future.
Brisbane Marine Pilots is proud to:
- Safely direct the passages of up to 6,000 large commercial vessels across the Moreton Bay Marine Park each year
- Facilitate more than $50 billion of trade handled through the Port, equating to over 50% of Queensland’s international trade
- Be the only organisation with proven systems uniquely developed for Brisbane.
